Filled with magical worlds, beings, beautiful sights to behold, I was definitely enamored by the story from the beginning。It follows Jani and her sister as they enter Hotel Magnifique, a unique hotel with a high-class guest list and the only place in this entire world where you can practice magic and be a suminaire without hurting someone。 So people love coming to this hotel for the entertainment and traveling for two weeks to different cities every single night。 The only caveat is that you forget the entire experience when you leave。 Very strange。That isn't the only strange part of this hotel and as you travel with Jani into the hotel and beyond, you realize there is way more going on than what you expected。The writing for this one was good, easy going and not ever serious。 It's definitely the vibe you want when you're reading for entertainment。 I loved the descriptions of the different suites, the entertainment, and even the back kitchens where Jani worked。 I will have to say that this book was overall fun to read and if you're a fan of YA fantasy, then you'll definitely love this one。There was a lot of mystery behind this book as well because from the moment Jani steps foot into the hotel, things seem a little bit off。 In fact, it reminded me a lot of Spirited Away and that scene when Chihiro meets Yubaba for the first time and she's asked to sign a contract that owns her name。 Yeah, it gets dark like that in this book。 And I welcomed the darker portions of this story。 I was honestly concerned that it would be all fun and games like Caraval, but I appreciated the level this book went and the twisty turns it made。While it was a predictable story, I still had a lot of fun watching it all unfold。 It's beautifully brilliant, utterly cruel at times, and such a great way to spend some time with a book。I think the only issue I had is that the world building was a bit unclear。 I found myself trying to understand how the artefacts work alongside the magic, but it really wasn't too big of a deal。 You get the idea of it through context and I've come to term not to expect too much from YA fantasy when it comes to world building。 Just hold on and enjoy the ride。 。。。more

The hardcover for this skated in at the last minute, and I was worried I wouldn’t get the book done in time for release day。 That was a silly worry, as any reader who starts this will find it near impossible to put down。 Taylor has drawn the reader in with a magical hotel。 This hotel could make all the difference for Jani and her sister, Zosa。 But Jani is a bit klutzy, stubborn, and nosy, and all that combined might land them in a load of hot water。 This reminds me of a song: “You can check out The hardcover for this skated in at the last minute, and I was worried I wouldn’t get the book done in time for release day。 That was a silly worry, as any reader who starts this will find it near impossible to put down。 Taylor has drawn the reader in with a magical hotel。 This hotel could make all the difference for Jani and her sister, Zosa。 But Jani is a bit klutzy, stubborn, and nosy, and all that combined might land them in a load of hot water。 This reminds me of a song: “You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave!”The blurb compares this to The Night Circus, and I think you will love this book all the more if you go in not expecting that。 There is just the right amount of mystery and magic while reading。 The setting has the potential to be so utterly horrifying, and Taylor has prayed on that and twisted it into an addicting and satisfying read。 。。。more

I couldn't tell you。 There is no true explanation of the magic system even though it is a fantasy novel and the magic system should be the biggest focus。 I want to know how these objects are used because from the best that I could tell you just hold them and something happens?I had so much hope for this book but it sadly let me down。 A lot。*This book was given to me to read and review but all opinions are honest and my own* 。。。more

I enjoyed the whimsy and the ambivalence of the magic but the main character was not easy to like。 For someone who wants to only work for the hotel long enough to save then live a comfortable life, she keeps making a lot of impulsive and risky decisions。 It helped build the world and magic but made her a character I couldn't root for。 Though the atmosphere was great and the 2nd/last third was the best part。 I enjoyed the whimsy and the ambivalence of the magic but the main character was not easy to like。 For someone who wants to only work for the hotel long enough to save then live a comfortable life, she keeps making a lot of impulsive and risky decisions。 It helped build the world and magic but made her a character I couldn't root for。 Though the atmosphere was great and the 2nd/last third was the best part。 。。。more

I was excited to see where the book would go next throughout and at several moments I held my breath so long I was at risk of passing out。I found the devotion between Jani and Zosa to be beautiful, as the eldest child myself there’s not a lot I wouldn’t do to keep my brother safe, so I could completely empathise with Jani and another character who also features within the book。 This was truly a pleasure from start to finish。 。。。more

Actual rating: 2。5 starsThanks to PenguinTeen for giving me a free digital ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。Am I disappointed that I didn't like this as much as I had hoped? Yes。 With comp titles like Caraval and The Night Circus I definitely had high hopes and I think that's what ultimately made me disappointed。 I really have to stop hyping up books in my mind, LOL。 I definitely think the comp titles are fitting and I would even say this book gave me HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE vibes Actual rating: 2。5 starsThanks to PenguinTeen for giving me a free digital ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。Am I disappointed that I didn't like this as much as I had hoped? Yes。 With comp titles like Caraval and The Night Circus I definitely had high hopes and I think that's what ultimately made me disappointed。 I really have to stop hyping up books in my mind, LOL。 I definitely think the comp titles are fitting and I would even say this book gave me HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE vibes (not the book because I've never read it but definitely the movie)。Quite frankly if it wasn't for the latter 50% of the book I would give this 2 stars instead of 2。5。 At times I simply felt。。。lost。 I didn't feel a connection to the main character, Jani, and I think that's because we don't know much about her upfront。 I'm the type of reader who really likes to be engrossed with a character's background information mildly upfront and that didn't happen here。 We get a lot of "telling" and not a lot of "showing。" The love Jani feels for her sister, Zosa, also got lost as well。 They're together for the first couple of chapters and then separated for all but the last two or three chapters, which caused a real disconnect for me in terms of understanding their sibling relationship。 I think I might just be growing tired of stories where the older sister resents her younger sister just because she's, i。e。, talented or prettier than the older sister could ever be。Despite the characters I did find the entire idea of the Hotel Magnifique rather enchanting though if you keep reading it gets darker and more sinister as we discover and learn more about the major players in this game。 I would have been okay if Jani didn't have a love interest in this story; I would have been fine if Bel were simply the catalyst for Jani and Zosa getting into Hotel Magnifique and that's it。The reveal about Jani was unexpected for me, and I think that's mainly because who she is is incredibly subtle throughout the book, not a lot of hints, and is literally the last thing I would have expected from Jani。 I hope that doesn't sound too harsh but really。 However, who she is and what she can do is fascinating and it becomes even more so when Jani is determined to save her sister and the hotel itself。Oddly enough one thing that irked me about the writing is how specific the author was in describing characters that don't even matter, just nameless guests or people that pass by。 Do I have to know the hair color, features, and skin color of every person in this book? No。 It almost felt like Taylor was throwing it in for the sake of saying the guests at the Hotel were varied and diverse。 I don't expect detailed descriptions of characters if they don't play a major role。 Regardless the writing wasn't anything to write home about。I'm sad I didn't love this as much as I wanted to, but I can definitely see fans of CARAVAL and THE NIGHT CIRCUS falling in love with it。 That simply just wasn't me。 。。。more

Kera’s Always Reading,
This was just a purely magical read that I adored。 It takes a minute for the story to jump off, but once it does, it completely transports you to this incandescent world of magic and flourish。 When Jani’s younger sister, Zosa gets an invite to the enchanted Hotel Magnifique to be employed as a singer, Jani is desperate to go with her to keep her safe。 And as she secures herself her own invitation from the handsome and mysterious Bel, she and her sister embark with the traveling hotel。There is so This was just a purely magical read that I adored。 It takes a minute for the story to jump off, but once it does, it completely transports you to this incandescent world of magic and flourish。 When Jani’s younger sister, Zosa gets an invite to the enchanted Hotel Magnifique to be employed as a singer, Jani is desperate to go with her to keep her safe。 And as she secures herself her own invitation from the handsome and mysterious Bel, she and her sister embark with the traveling hotel。There is so much wonder and intrigue surrounding this entrancing hotel, it’s guests, workers and it’s rooms and the sisters quickly get caught up in it all。But there is something dark at play here inside the hotel。 Not everyone is who they claim to be。 And it quickly becomes clear that real danger is on the horizon for these sisters。While trying to protect Zosa from peril, she interacts with so many interesting people。 Her moments with Bel are some of my favorites though。 Their romance was really beautiful, but not completely without its own hinderances。I could not put this book down! I was granted the DRC of this via Netgalley but I opted for the ALC instead and it was so worth it。 The narration was fantastic。 。。。more

I had a lot of fun reading this book! What I enjoyed most about it was the setting。 I’ve never read a book set in a hotel before and I didn’t know what I was missing! I also liked the wide variety of characters and their different kinds of magic。 At times I felt that the romance was a bit rushed and would have liked to see it have more time to develop but overall a great read!
